11 Day North Island Self Drive Itinerary.
Day 1 Arrive Auckland. Transfer to The Heritage Hotel. Rest of day free.
Day 2 Morning sightseeing in Auckland. Afternoon free.
Day 3 Auckland-Bay of Islands (285 km) Collect your rental car and make your way to the beautiful Bay of Islands via the Waipoua Kauri Forest. Two nights at Arcadia Lodge on Russell.
Day 4 Bay of Islands. Explore this delightful area at your leisure. The many activities on offer include swimming with the dolphins, sightseeing cruises and tall ship sailing, while on land the historic sites at Waitangi prove a popular attraction.
Day 5 Bay of Islands-Waitomo (420 km) Head back towards Auckland and continue south to Waitomo, for an overnight stay at Waitomo Caves Hotel For over 100 years Waitomo Glowworm Caves have attracted millions of people from all over the world. The moment you enter this subterranean wonderland you'll discover an ancient underground labyrinth of limestone caves and grottos, and marvel at amazing stalactites and stalagmites – mother nature’s decorations created by nature. You’ll experience a boat trip like no other, journeying through the starry expanse of the Glowworm Grotto, while your way is lit by a multitude of tiny glowworm lights. Dinner and breakfast at the hotel is included.
Day 6 Waitomo -Rotorua (165 km) It is only a comparatively short distance to Rotorua, about 1,5 hours drive south to Te Kuiti on to route 30 which will take you all the way to Rotorua. Spend two nights in Rotorua at Millennium Hotel.
Day 7 Rotorua A full day to explore New Zealand’s best-known geothermal area with its geysers, volcanoes, lakes and Maori culture. Optional traditional Maori feast (hangi) in the evening (at additional cost).
Day 8 Rotorua-Lake Taupo-Tongariro National Park (180 km) Witness superb and varied scenery as you travel through the heart of the North Island. Visit the Wairakei geothermal area and Lake Taupo en route to the highest mountain on the North Island. The active volcano of Ruapehu is snow-capped and surrounded by desert like lava and ash. Overnight at the Grand Chateau
Day 9 Tongariro National Park- Wellington (330 km) A choice of route brings you to Wellington, New Zealand’s lively capital city, which has a superb location on a sheltered bay. Check in at your hotel, City Life. 2 nights. Return your car and enjoy Wellington on foot.
Day 10 Wellington A day to enjoy the capital.
